Center for peace and Environmental Justice, CEPEJ, an NGO with a Head Office in Warri and branch offices in parts of Nigeria, has called on the State and Local Govts, Environmental and Health Agencies in Delta State to intervene in the environmental and health situations of the people living around the DSC roundabout area of Effurun, Uvwie LGA, following the heaps of plastic wastes dumped and abandoned on the road.
The Country Director of CEPEJ, Chief Comrade Sheriff Mulade on Tuesday November 16, 2021, called on the State Environment Board to attend to the needs of the people living in the area due to the environmental hazards caused by the plastic wastes. He said the abandoned plastic refuse constitutes an environmental hazard, which will cause health problems to the citizens of the State living around that area, as well as pose a high risk to road users plying that route.
To avoid accidents and other unpleasant incidents, Comrade Mulade urged Uvwie Local Govt Chairman, Hon. Ramson Onoyake, to swing into action and remove the said heap of plastic debris at the DSC roundabout section of the East West Road.
The plastic debris was reportedly dumped and abandoned some weeks ago by an unknown person, using a heavy duty truck, transporting them to an unknown destination for recycling. Road users woke up to meet the plastic heap on the road which resulted in a heavy traffic on that section of the highway.
